Fierth i-ON Interview with Mark Sam Rosenthal,

Editor / Founder
Founder & Editor of Fierth.com - I am not a journalist, I am not a blogger, and I am not a writer.

Fierth:            What is your name?

Mark Sam Rosenthal

Fierth:            Do you have a nick-name?

Mark:              My name is a nickname. Also, my brother calls me Bubs and two friends call me Marty.

Fierth:            What is your motto?

Mark:              I have always depended on the strangeness of kind people.

Fierth:            What exactly are you wearing right now?

Mark:              25% of what’s on my body right now is from OMG. Winky emoticon.

Fierth:            How do you describe your work?

Mark:              “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion” – Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias.

I like to use comedy to say all the politically incorrect things most people feel they can’t say – because I think we’re all too easily offended. I hope we’ll one day live in a world where no one gets offended. And also that world will be free of Mormons.

Fierth:            How tall are you?

Mark:              6’2”

Fierth:            How do you keep it real?

Mark:              I don’t think I really do.

Fierth:            What were you like as a child?

Mark:              Gay

Fierth:            As a teenager where did you think you would be now ?

Mark:              In high school my biggest fantasy was to run away to Vegas and turn tricks out of myPlymouthin some parking lot. Seriously. I never got beyond that. I don’t think I ever thought I would be this old.

Fierth:            Describe a time/event in your life that you’re nostalgic for.

Mark:              I always cry at Christmas Eve service when I sing Silent Night with all these people who knew me as a child. (Disregard the name; I am a Methodist.) I wasn’t a particularly happy child, but I have a delusional, idealized sense of where I come from nonetheless. And the warmth of that annual rite just melts me every time.

Fierth:            What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Mark:              I used to try and make my little brother cry and often succeeded. Also I once turned in two girls for drinking on the 8th grade church retreat – and that got me in a lot of trouble with my “peer group.”

Fierth:            How would your best friend describe you?

Mark:              Wrong with a twist of hope.

Fierth:            If someone wrote a biography on your life , what do you think the title should be?

Mark:              I already did. It’s called I Light Up My Life: The Mark Sam Celebrity Autobiography. (see web site)

Fierth:            List 5 quirky things about yourself.

-I am obsessed with maps.

-I like to use archaic phraseology like “picture show” instead of movie.

-I love to visit ruins.

-I think it’s really funny to speak German or Spanish with a Southern accent.

-I have gotten poison ivy on my knees two separate summers – be careful in thoseJonesBeach dunes!

Fierth:            What motivates you in life?

Mark:              Fear of not living up to my potential

Fierth:            What brings you the most joy?

Mark:              Being in the ocean

Fierth:            If you weren’t doing what you are doing now, what do you think you would be doing?

Mark:              Writing catalog blurbs for Spiegel (I came closer than I care to say.)

Fierth:            If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Mark:              Sing like a big, busty black woman.

Fierth:            Have you ever felt hopeless? How did you get through it?

Mark:              Yes. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Fierth:            Write a brief story about an actual accidental adventure you’ve had.

Mark:              My friend Coco and I once got a rental car stuck in a snowbank on a mountain road inOregon– a road that turned out to have been closed due to a landslide. We had to hike 20 miles down the road in the dark without seeing a single soul for hours and knock on some stranger’s door in the middle of the night. This stranger had a custom-built display case for her complete collection of first-lady dolls, which few have the space for here in New York, and she drove us into Grants Pass and dropped us at a Denny’s; I looked at the coffee urns and the warm lights of the restaurant and started crying, because I guess I’d thought I might have died out there on that mountain. I am a swamp person fromBaton Rouge: mountains are for goats. And I have never and will never go back toOregon.

Fierth:            Do you have a bucket list? List some things on it.

1- Karaoke inBerlin- in German.

2- TheGreat Barrier Reef.

3- Double penetration.

Fierth:            You can trade places with any other person, living or dead, for 24 hours. Who would you choose and why?

Mark:              A sexy ancient Roman. I would literally kill someone I love in order to get to experience ancientRome. And if I were sexy then I could probably go to an ancient orgy to boot!

Fierth:            What do you think about and are the first three things you do first after waking up in the morning?

Mark:              I make my bed, I take a crap, I pray. I try and think about being thankful for the day.

Fierth:            What do you daydream about?

Mark:              Remodeling my childhood home, and strippers

Fierth:            What are you going to do next?
